Andy Butler says Rovers’ final pre-season friendly against Sheffield United was a good test for the players before the side kick-off their League One campaign.

Chris Wilder’s side were 2-0 winners on the night at the Keepmoat Stadium, but the club captain says Blades goalkeeper Simon Moore prevented the game from finishing up as a different scoreline.

“It was a very good test before the start of the season, I thought the lads applied themselves very well and I like the gaffer said we matched them in the first-half,” he said.

“They are a very good side with quality players and that is why they play in the Championship, I think it was an ideal game to finish pre-season on as they had a similar side to what they played with last season.

“I think we could have score four in the first-half but their keeper pulled off some great saves, so if some of those hit the back of the net it would have been a different game.”

Rovers head to Roots Hall on August 4 as they kick-off their 2018/19 Sky Bet League One season against Southend United, and the centre-back says the side are looking very strong.

“I think this side that we’ve got is very strong, we just weren’t as clinical as we could have been last season, and the gaffer has come in and wants us to be more attacking, which can only be a positive,” he added.

“We have a really adaptable side here with players that have played in different formations during their careers, so there will be no problems with that under the gaffer.

“Every side's ambition is to win the league, have a good cup run, win the Checkatrade Trophy and that’s what you have to do, set your targets as high as possible.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
