Bennett: I Want To Win Games

3 August 2012

Rovers Player caught up with Kyle Bennett ahead of the Barnsley game on Saturday.

Bennett has been one of the standout players in the pre-season, and has revealed he is hoping to make this season one to remember.

Bennett’s performance against Hull City was his best yet as a Rovers player, however he labelled it a team performance.

“I think the second half against Hull City was one of the best performances I have put in attacking wise. Sometimes the gaffer asks us to play differently but I think he’s happier with the defensive side because it benefits the whole team.

“The first half they passed the ball around really well, they played three in midfield because we started the game with a 4-4-1-1 system. It was one of the toughest halves of football because they had so much of the ball.

“Second half the gaffer told us to stay focused and keep moving across in your slots which prevented them getting in between the lines and getting clean shots on goal.

“We all came out and knew what we needed to do, we had to pass the ball a bit better which we didn’t manage to do in the first half – we managed to do it which looked good for the fans and for ourselves.”

Although the league will not be as tough as last season, Bennett still believes it will be difficult however he is hoping to end the season with success.

“It’s going to be a tough league, last year there were a lot of big teams which made it a bit tougher but this season I think everyone is in it to win it.

“I think anyone can beat anyone; our main aim is to hit the ground running which is the key to having a good season.

“It’s a bit more difficult than the Championship in terms of physicality, but I played in League Two with Bury the year before last and we passed the ball around, obviously some games you have to mix it up and use the aerial route –it’s all about adapting to the situation.

“In this league, I think anyone can get promoted, which is our aim whether it’s via the play-offs or automatically, we’re certainly not thinking about relegation - the lads that experienced it last season are all determined not to let that happen again.

“On a personal level, I want to win games, and hope to get as many starts under my belt as possible.

“One of my best mates is a sports performance coach so I’ve been working closely with him during the summer. He’s been really helpful to me which was really good. I knew what I had to do to come back and hit the ground running.”
