Npower League 1

DONCASTER ROVERS 4 Scunthorpe United 0

Referee – Mr Simon Hooper

Attendance – 8,037 (1,173 visitors)

It’s the M18 ‘derby’ time again, with a visit from Scunthorpe United. The Rovers made one change, with Paul Quinn replacing the injured Andy Griffin. There was also a change on the bench with Sammy Clingan replacing Jordan Ball. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half.

The visitors kicked off and the early minutes were spent sizing each other up Clarke got a shot in but put wide for the Iron and on the quarter hour Keegan had a go from 25yards. The ball was blocked but looked to be falling for Paynter but before he could react the ball was cleared by a defender. Five minutes later and Paynter did get a try at goal from 25yards but put it high and wide. The sparring was over though in the 22nd minute when Cotterill got to the right byline and crossed to the far post where Ribeiro and Mildenhall waited for each other to clear the ball. Martin WOODS had other ideas, reached a leg round and prodded the ball into the net.  The midfield duel between the two teams carried on with little incident of note until the 35th minute when Scunthorpe won the first corner of the game but it was comfortably cleared. Minutes later and Martin Woods put wide from 25yards and Walker, for the visitors, had a shot deflected for another corner. Back to the visitors end, where the Rovers forced a corner on their left. Cotterill placed it into the penalty area near the spot where Martin Woods half volleyed it, with a deflection taking it over the bar. In added time a Scunthorpe corner came to nothing and a half nearly devoid of goalmouth action came to an end with the Rovers having the advantage of a goal.

The Rovers got the game going in the second half, went down their left, with Martin Woods playing the ball down the line for Hume. His low cross into the six-yard box was parried away by Mildenhall but straight to COTTERILL, who sidefooted low into the net. Minutes later and a good move by the Rovers gave Harper the chance to shoot from about 25yards but he was well wide. A couple of minutes later and a corner to the Rovers came to nothing. In the 54th minute a good run by Duffy gave him the chance of a crack at goal from 25yards but he put it wide. Martin Woods, who had been influential in midfield, came off with a knock in the 59th minute and was replaced by Brown. Then, in the 62nd minute, a good move by the Rovers in midfield led to Paynter getting into the penalty area and from a tight angle to the right of goal his shot was blocked by the keeper and went out for a corner and a good ball in by Cotterill was headed into the net by JONES. Two minutes later and PAYNTER shot from 15yards out past Mildenhall for goal number 4. The Rovers were not satisfied and continued the hunt for more goals. Jones had a header following a corner blocked and in the 80th minute Cotterill’s free kick was deflected over the bar for a corner that was headed wide by Jones. More corners followed as the Rovers heaped on the pressure but nothing came from them. In the 87th minute, Syers was played in on goal but the keeper came out and blocked the shot with his legs. The visitors tried hard to stem the red and white tide and managed a corner in the 89th minute but nothing came from it. In the second minute of added time, a corner from Cotterill dropped to Jones at the far post. His shot was blocked and Brown following up had his shot blocked, the ball coming out to Syers, who blazed over the bar. The fifth goal didn’t come but it had been a scintillating display in the second half from the Rovers, which gave them a comprehensive win.
